This is the 26th and final poem in Kyo’s first book of poetry, Jigyaku, Rensou Furan Shinema. The pages read right to left, starting with the title page.

Notes: The title is pronounced “Ki Ki Ki” in Japanese, and so has an alliterative appeal that the English translation lacks.  Its meaning is something like demon vessel or demon container, maybe demon instrument.

This poem has three different areas where a word is scribbled out. I don’t know if this is an example of the censorship of which Kyo speaks at the beginning of the book, or if it’s by design. All I know is that I can ALMOST read it, but not quite.  I marked it in the translation with empty parentheses and in the Japanese with empty spaces.

There are many different ways of saying the personal pronoun “I” in Japanese.  In the line “Come, this lascivious form of mine,” the personal pronoun “watashi” is used, which is often used by men, but in this case, I think it might refer to a female.  In the line “Immobile, I”, the personal pronoun “boku” is used, which is a male pronoun. 

The two areas where it says “present progressive form” are translated exactly as written: it’s a technical term referring to a verbal tense, expressed in English with “to be” and a gerund form of the action verb (I am doing this, he is going to the store, they are looking at it.)
